The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda has continued its vigorous advocacy of Tom Perez’s confirmation to be the next Secretary of Labor. As per the letter, “we are confident that the experience and values Tom Perez will bring to the job will make him an effective Secretary of Labor dedicated to ensuring that all Americans continue to rise out of our recent economic crisis through access to quality jobs and a safe workplace.”
As per the letter sent from the CHC Chair to the HELP Committee on the day of Tom Perez’s hearing, “we urge you to immediately confirm Tom Perez as Secretary of Labor. He is eminently qualified and there is no doubt that under his watch, every American worker’s civil and constitutional rights will be protected – no matter their race, sex, disability, religion, familial status or national origin.”
A coalition of 82 national organizations representing the broad diversity of our country recently called on the Senate to swiftly confirm Tom Perez to be Labor Secretary.
In their joint letter to the Senate, the groups point to Perez’s leadership of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice as a key factor in their endorsement, stating that “Mr. Perez helped build consensus with stakeholders to uphold the civil and constitutional rights of all Americans, particularly some of the most vulnerable members of our society….He has also been a tireless champion of voting rights, disability rights, equal educational equity, and has prosecuted some of the most heinous hate crimes in recent memory. ”
“For a party that is trying to overcome racially insensitive comments and engage the Hispanic community, I would suggest not smearing a highly qualified Latino cabinet nominee. While Republicans are blocking a skilled public servant only for their own partisan purposes, real problems concerning the rights of our workforce and the quality of life for our working families are still awaiting solutions.”

Recently, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce endorsed President Obama’s nomination of Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez to be the next Secretary of Labor.
Marc Rodriguez, the Board Chairman of the Hispanic Chamber, which represents over 3 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S., said that “I am confident Thomas Perez will be a leading voice not only for our nation’s workers, but also for America’s immigrant entrepreneurs… that is precisely the kind of leader we need at the Department of Labor.”
